“Open the eyes of my heart, Lord

Open the eyes of my heart

I want to see You

I want to see You

To see you high and lifted up

Shinin’ in the light of your glory

Pour out your power and love

As we sing holy, holy, holy”

To see Him. To see Him rightly.

I didn’t spend much time in Ukraine without hearing the Ukrainians burst into worship sessions. Whether it was right after breakfast or right before curfew, my Ukrainian friends would always have a guitar close by. The people who would lead us in worship were so inspiring to me. It honestly blew my mind the amount of joy that these people held. I get frustrated when someone doesn’t go when a light turns green or other silly things like that. Their country is being attacked and they don’t get to see their families and the main word I would use to describe them is joyful. Truly full of joy.

There is a man who has dedicated his time to driving into villages on the front lines to deliver food. He doesn’t get to see his wife and son often because they live about an hour away. In Ukraine right now gas is limited and extremely expensive. It’s not easy to just take trips home all of the time. He is one of the most passionate worshippers I have ever witnessed. He puts all of his heart and all of his passion into worshiping the Lord. You can tell the genuine love he has for the Lord and for his community. You can see that he is there to lay everything down at the feet of the Father and just lock eyes with Him. I would do anything to hear him sing this song just one more time.

There are other men and women of the church that lead or participate in these worship sessions. People who have given up everything to serve the Lord and their country. They sing and dance and clap with such hope and belief that the Lord is who He says He is and that He will do what He has promised to do.

My teammate Gabe and I got the opportunity to lead worship at one of their church services. We sang this song (in English) because we knew that they also knew how to sing it in Russian or Ukrainian. One of the coolest parts of this is that the language barrier didn’t keep us from being able to worship the Lord together. We were all simultaneously asking the Lord to open our eyes and allow us to see Him in a new way. We all got to come together as the Body and sing “Holy Holy Holy“. The whole church erupted in praise for our Lord, Savior, and Provider. If you go to my Instagram or Facebook, I am planning on attaching a video or audio of us worshiping together.

While I am now stateside, I still want to share the things the Lord did and is doing in Ukraine. Please continue to pray for the war to end and for the Lord’s will to be done. Pray for safety and protection over the people of the church as they drive into the frontlines. Pray for the team of A Jesus Mission volunteers who are still there serving. Pray for the gospel to reach these people who are in dire need of hope in this hopeless time.

  1. I loved getting to see you in Gainsville. I’m in awe of your boldness to step into all the Lord has called you to without fear. It is so beautiful to hear everyone worshipping in their own language. It’s like a glimpse of heaven. Love ya, and praying for you.
